Russia Launches Devastating Missile Barrage on Kyiv as Trump Criticizes Zelensky Over Peace Proposal Involving Crimea

April 24, 2025 – Kyiv, Ukraine

In one of the deadliest assaults on Ukraine’s capital in recent months, Russian forces launched a massive wave of missile and drone strikes across Kyiv early Thursday morning, killing at least 9 civilians and injuring over 80 others, including multiple children. The attack has been widely condemned internationally and comes at a time of heightened political tension, as former U.S. President Donald Trump made controversial remarks criticizing Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky for rejecting a potential peace deal involving the surrender of Crimea to Russia.

Relentless Assault on the Capital

The Ukrainian military reported that Russia launched 215 aerial threats overnight, including ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, and drones. Ukraine’s air defense systems successfully intercepted 112 targets, but dozens of missiles still penetrated the shield and struck residential areas, causing widespread destruction.

Entire apartment blocks were left in ruins. Emergency responders worked through the night to rescue people trapped beneath the rubble. In the early morning hours, smoke continued to rise over Kyiv’s Sviatoshynskyi and Obolonskyi districts—areas severely impacted by the strikes. Firefighters battled blazes caused by missile impacts, while ambulances rushed the wounded to overcrowded hospitals.

Among the injured were several children, including a 9-year-old girl currently in critical condition. Hospitals in Kyiv have since declared a state of emergency to accommodate the influx of casualties.

Zelensky Cuts Trip Short Amid Crisis

President Zelensky, who was on an official diplomatic visit to South Africa, immediately canceled the remainder of his tour and announced he was returning to Kyiv. In a video message, he condemned the Russian strikes, calling them “acts of terror targeting civilians and an attempt to destabilize Ukraine through fear.”

Zelensky urged Ukraine’s allies to respond with stronger support—especially in the form of advanced air defense systems, which he described as “the only way to protect innocent lives and preserve stability in Europe.”

He also reaffirmed Ukraine’s stance on sovereignty, stating:

“No amount of pressure, missile strikes, or political games will make us surrender our land. Ukraine will never recognize Crimea or any occupied region as Russian territory.”

Trump’s Comments Spark Backlash

In the aftermath of the attack, former U.S. President Donald Trump issued a statement suggesting that Ukraine could have avoided continued bloodshed by agreeing to a peace proposal that would have involved recognizing Russia’s annexation of Crimea. According to sources close to Trump, the proposed deal also included a ceasefire and a pledge for Ukraine not to join NATO.

Trump publicly blamed Zelensky for rejecting this offer, claiming:

“He had a chance to end this war, but he chose pride over peace. The United States offered a solution that would have saved lives.”

These remarks sparked immediate backlash from both U.S. lawmakers and European leaders. Critics accused Trump of legitimizing illegal territorial occupation and undermining Ukraine’s fight for independence.

President Zelensky responded firmly, saying:

“Accepting such a deal would mean abandoning our people in Crimea and Donbas to tyranny. Ukraine will never trade peace for submission.”

International Response and Diplomatic Concerns

The international community reacted with alarm to both the renewed Russian aggression and Trump’s controversial statement. European Union leaders issued a joint condemnation of the strikes, reaffirming their support for Ukraine’s territorial integrity. The United Nations is scheduled to hold an emergency session to address the situation.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg also voiced concerns, stating that “Russia’s use of ballistic missiles on civilian areas is a violation of international law and could amount to war crimes.”

Meanwhile, diplomats across Europe and North America are reportedly engaged in backchannel negotiations aimed at restarting formal peace talks—but any proposal that includes territorial concessions remains highly divisive.

The Human Toll and a Long Road Ahead

While the political debate continues, the people of Kyiv are left to grapple with loss and destruction. Volunteers and medics have mobilized across the capital to deliver aid, and shelters are being reinforced ahead of what many fear could be further escalation in the coming days.

As the war grinds on, Ukraine’s leadership remains adamant that peace must not come at the cost of freedom and sovereignty. And with new geopolitical rifts opening over how that peace might be achieved, one thing is clear: the path forward will be long, fraught, and uncertain.
